A look at the demographic development in Germany reveals that the population is getting older. At the same time, it can be observed that people keep their own teeth longer and longer. From a dental point of view, it is noticeable that root caries or periodontitis occurs more and more frequently in older people. In order to counter these clinical pictures preventively, adapted measures with regard to home dental care are necessary.
Calcium phosphates should be used primarily for the remineralization of possible defects in the tooth. These also work with low salivation, which can be a common side effect in old age. One of these calcium phosphates is hydroxyapatite. In addition to remineralizing ingredients, ingredients that care for the gums should find their way into home dental care. In addition to glycerine, hyaluronic acid is one of these ingredients in toothpastes and mouthwash solutions. Care should also be taken to ensure a saliva-neutral pH value for these products. If these recommendations are followed, an improvement in the quality of life and the maintenance of oral and dental health is very likely.
