Oral diseases are a common and widespread problem in the population. These diseases include caries and periodontitis (inflammation of the periodontal structures), or the preliminary stage gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). The diseases mentioned here are of microbial origin and arise when the oral bacterial flora is out of balance.
In modern dental care there are different approaches to preventing these diseases. Antibacterial therapies (e.g. with CHX) were preferred in the past, but have shown that long-term use can lead to resistance and subsequent infections. Biomimetic approaches pursue the use of natural enzymes also found in saliva and anti-adherent strategies. The disease-causing bacteria are fought, but the balance is not changed. Hydroxyapatite reduces the accumulation of bacteria on the tooth surface and is therefore an ideal active ingredient that can maintain the oral ecological balance.
